Oh, Deer, where are you headed?
The Photo: Oh, Deer.
Oh, Deer. This head shot was taken in a neighborhood in the northwest part of Colorado Springs – up close to the foothills of the Rockies, in an area with foliage and roaming animals. There have been substantially more wild animals in this area by Ute Valley Park since the Waldo Canyon fire last summer. The fire stripped the mountains of food and places to hide. Now small groups of deer roam the neighborhood, and this particular one seemed to dare me to take him on. So, I did, but with my camera.
I like to think that one of two things was happening. Perhaps he was simply on the lookout in what for him is a dry time. Half of Life, a poem translated from German, moans, “Ah, where will I find flowers come winter, and where the sunshine and shade of earth?”
But I’m more on the optimistic side. Even though perhaps a dry time, notice that this deer is looking up. Dag Hammarskjold is quoted as commenting that “only he who keeps his eye fixed on the far horizon will find his right road.” Yes, even with his scraping for food, the adventure of the main path is the primary concern.
A thought that may take us far as well.
