Valentine rose, a visible symbol

The Photo: Valentine Rose.

Valentine Rose. A red rose speaks of the language of the heart. Recently at church, my pastor had something to say about that. Matt Heard of Woodmen Valley Chapel said, “Fight for your heart, fight with your heart.” I’ve been thinking about this ever since.

Pastor Matt was talking about engaging your heart in your everyday life. Of course this could be romantic love Robert Burns: “O my luve’s like a red, red rose That’s newly spring in June;”. Or a passion for a cause. Like a very wealthy man named Borden of Yale who died 100 years ago at age 25 – he went to Egypt to share his faith, and wound up dying within a month of meningitis. Found in his Bible was a note: “No retreat. No regrets.” We want to live a life of passion, where we want to get up in the morning and face each day with excitement, moving through life with exhilaration … with our heart captured by the right person or cause.

The Christian Scriptures (Prov. 4:23) say it well: “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flows the springs of life.”* Yes, fight with your heart.
