Fairy Tale, a Musical Story.

Fairy Tale, a Musical Story.

The Photo: Fairy Tale.

A few weeks ago I attended the local symphony, the Colorado Springs Philharmonic to hear a performance of Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland, the American composer who emphasized America of the last century. The first half of the performance was about Mr. Copland, the ballet the music was written for and about the first performance of the piece in the 1940’s.

The team of people who put together a multi-media presentation used photos of the Appalachians in the Spring that really had little to do with the story of the ballet but brought the feel of this rose to mind. The fairy tale aspect, the feel of the photo, represents the feel of the story of this ballet. It’s the story of one day: the sun rising, a simple wedding, dancing, the sun setting. The way the rose petals sweep, the lightness of the photo, is a delightful visual for the music. This piece includes the well-known Shaker song Simple Gifts which is one of my very favorite hymns of all time.

One line that runs through my mind from that song is this: “And when we find ourselves in the place just right, will be in the valley of love and delight. . .” That’s the Fairy Tale of the music, and of this particular photo. Here’s a clip of the song for your enjoyment.
